Glass packaging collection for recycling in the EU has reached a new record. The latest data released by Close the Glass Loop shows that 82.2% of glass packaging placed on the EU market was collected for recycling in 2024.

A record performance for glass collection

This performance confirms the strength of separate collection systems across Europe and the role they play in keeping glass in a circular economy.

It is especially significant that 87% of all collected glass packaging comes through municipal waste-management systems, underlining the importance of local collection infrastructure, consumer participation and collaboration with municipalities.

Why collection quality matters

Collection quality matters as much as collection quantity. High collection rates are an essential first step, but high-quality separate collection is what enables glass to be recycled back into new bottles and jars.

This supports a true closed loop, reduces the need for virgin raw materials and contributes to lower energy use in glass manufacturing.

What this means for the value chain

For brands, retailers, municipalities, recyclers and value-chain partners, the message is clear: Europe is making strong progress, but achieving the 2030/90% ambition will require continued investment in collection infrastructure, consumer participation and high-quality sorting systems across all Member States.
